Don’t Just Retire — Redesign Your Life
Written by M. Scott Wilson, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Retired, Founder of Create Memories Thru Travel, and Author of Retirement Bucket List.
Retirement Isn’t an Ending. It’s a Design Challenge.
After 31 years in the Army and surviving a total life collapse in 2017 — divorce, parents’ health crises, forced resignation, and single fatherhood — Scott Wilson learned a powerful truth:
The storm doesn’t define you. Your response does.
In this guide, Scott shares the exact 4 R Framework he used to rebuild his life with purpose, travel the world with Raquel, regain his health, and create a future he’s excited to wake up to every day.
Whether you’re newly retired, approaching retirement, or simply ready for a reset, these four steps will help you move from “What now?” to “This is exactly what I want.”
The 4 R Framework
Use this framework as your personal roadmap for designing a more meaningful, adventurous, and intentional retirement.
1. Reclaim Responsibility
When the structure of work disappears, drift moves in. No more boss, no more mission, no more daily orders. Reclaiming responsibility means deciding: This next chapter is mine.
Action Steps: Stop waiting for motivation or perfect conditions. Take ownership of your time, health, finances, and joy.
Ask yourself daily: “What is one thing I can control today?”
Reflection Prompt: Where in your life are you still quietly waiting? What small responsibility can you reclaim this week?
2. Reignite Curiosity
Curiosity is oxygen for a vibrant life. When curiosity fades, aging accelerates. Curiosity keeps you growing, learning, and alive.
Action Steps: Do one thing for the first time each month. Ask “What if…?” questions again.
Learn a language, pick up an instrument, try a new hobby, or explore a new place.
Reflection Prompt: What have you stopped being curious about? What’s one small thing you’d love to learn or try?
3. Rebuild Through Experience
Identity isn’t rebuilt by thinking — it’s rebuilt by doing. Real growth comes from action and evidence.
Action Steps:
- Schedule experiences that force growth, such as travel, classes, volunteering, or physical challenges.
- Celebrate small wins — they become proof that you’re still capable.
- Build new stories through real-world action.
Reflection Prompt: What experience would stretch you and prove to yourself that you’re still willing?
4. Redesign Your Future
Stop letting time happen to you. Start designing it intentionally. Create a clear, exciting vision for the next 5–10 years.
Action Steps:
- Design your ideal day, week, and year.
- Decide where you want to live, how strong you want to feel, who you want to spend time with, and what legacy you want to leave.
- Turn that vision into specific, scheduled goals.
Reflection Prompt: If nothing changes, what will the next 10 years look like? Now, what would they look like if you designed them on purpose?
